MLK DAY CELIBRACTION AROUND MEMPHIS 2026

I noticed in this year's King March that the people were more solemn and had a greater sense of urgency than in previous years. Many of the participants express concern regarding Memphis being occupied by the National Guard. I witnessed the frustration expressed from the racial profiling that is occurring with the traffic stops by ICE. Even with these looming issues, a strange Hope flowed from the mouths of labor union members, people of faith, and from folks who just wanted to see a change in their material reality.  That Hope was quietly transmitted through an exchange of gestures, and of glances that affirmed a knowing that the movement can, and the movement will take place again in Memphis.  The call for the people to again nonviolently withdraw consent from the oppressive forces of poverty and racism showed with a renewed dignity that marked the day.
